When emergencies strike, ALN families often face extra challenges.
Flooding, severe weather, power cuts, school closures, transport disruption and rapid changes can be especially difficult for disabled children, autistic and ADHD young people, PDA profile learners, EOTAS students and adults with sensory, medical or mobility needs.

This Emergency Help Centre brings together the essential information, contact numbers and ALN focused guidance you may need during a crisis.

ALN Focus: What Families Need to Know During Emergencies

Children and adults with Additional Learning Needs often need:

predictable routines
safe sensory spaces
access to familiar items
power for AAC, feeding or medical equipment
reliable transport
calm, clear communication

During a crisis, these foundations can collapse very quickly.

Below is ALN focused guidance you can use immediately.

ALN Emergency Essentials Checklist

Essential medications and prescriptions
Ear defenders, sunglasses or sensory comfort items
Power banks for AAC and medical devices
Favourite foods (especially for ARFID or sensory restricted diets)
Weighted blanket or calming object
Phone chargers
Extra clothing and dry socks
Emergency communication card explaining your child’s needs

Social Stories and Regulation Scripts

If you need help writing a social story for:

unexpected travel
staying in a new location
changes to school or college routine
